How to Clean a Stainless Steel Water Bottle (and Get Rid of Smells)

21 October 2026

Bottle and straw cleaning brush set – how to clean a stainless steel water bottle

To clean a stainless steel water bottle, wash it every day with warm soapy water and a bottle brush, then deep clean it once a week with baking soda or white vinegar. The lid and straw need the most attention, because that is where smells and mould usually start.

Daily clean (1 minute)

  1. Empty the bottle and take the lid apart, including any straw or silicone ring.
  2. Add warm water and a drop of dish soap.
  3. Scrub the inside with a long bottle brush, especially the bottom and the neck.
  4. Rinse well with clean water.
  5. Leave the bottle and lid to dry upside down, separately, with the lid off.

A bottle and straw cleaning brush set makes this much easier, as it reaches the bottom of tall bottles and the inside of straws.

Weekly deep clean

Option 1: Baking soda (best for smells)

  1. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda and fill the bottle with warm water.
  2. Close it and shake, then leave it for 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Scrub with the brush, rinse well and dry.

Option 2: White vinegar (best for limescale)

  1. Fill the bottle halfway with white vinegar and top up with warm water.
  2. Leave it for a few hours or overnight.
  3. Scrub, then rinse several times until the vinegar smell is gone.

White spots inside a bottle are usually limescale from hard tap water. The vinegar method removes them.

Cleaning the lid, straw and seal

  • Remove the silicone seal from the lid if it comes out, and wash it separately. Smells often hide behind it.
  • Push a thin straw brush all the way through the straw with soapy water, then rinse.
  • Soak lids and straws in the baking soda or vinegar mix during the weekly clean.
  • Tumblers with built-in straws, like the Stanley Quencher H2.0, need the straw and the lid's moving parts cleaned too.

What to avoid

  • Bleach and chlorine cleaners: they can damage and pit stainless steel.
  • Steel wool or harsh scrubbers: they scratch the steel and the outside coating.
  • The dishwasher, unless the maker says it's safe. Heat can damage the vacuum seal on insulated bottles, so they stop keeping drinks cold.
  • Closing a wet bottle: trapped moisture causes smells and mould. Always dry it open.

FAQs

How often should I clean my water bottle?

Wash it every day, and deep clean it once a week. Clean it straight away after juice, coffee or protein shakes.

Why does my stainless steel bottle smell?

Usually from the lid seal, the straw or from storing it closed while damp. Wash the seal separately and use the baking soda method.

Can I put hot drinks in my bottle after cleaning with vinegar?

Yes, once it is rinsed well. Rinse several times until there's no vinegar smell left.
