How to Clean a Humidifier: Simple Weekly Routine for UAE Homes

A humidifier is easy to keep clean if you change the water every day and descale it once a week. In the UAE, where AC dries out the air and tap water is hard, that weekly clean matters even more: mineral scale builds up fast and old water can start to smell. Here is a simple routine for cool-mist and ultrasonic humidifiers.
Every day: fresh water
- Empty the tank and refill it with fresh water. Don't top up old water.
- Wipe the inside of the tank with a clean cloth if you see any film.
- If you can, use distilled or bottled water. It leaves far less white dust and scale than tap water.
Once a week: the vinegar clean
- Unplug it. Always unplug the humidifier and empty all the water first.
- Take it apart. Remove the tank and any parts your manual says can come off.
- Soak in vinegar. Pour white vinegar into the base (the water area) and a cup of vinegar mixed with water into the tank. Leave it for 20 to 30 minutes to loosen scale.
- Scrub gently. Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush on the scale. On ultrasonic models, clean the small round disc (the transducer) very gently, without scratching it.
- Rinse well. Rinse every part with clean water until the vinegar smell is gone.
- Dry completely. Let all parts air-dry before you put it back together.
Keep water away from the electrical parts and the power socket. Never put the base under a running tap unless the manual allows it.
Stopping white dust and smells
- White dust on furniture comes from minerals in tap water. Switching to distilled water is the easiest fix.
- Musty smells mean water has been sitting too long. Empty it daily and do the vinegar clean.
- Pink or black spots are a sign of mould or bacteria. Clean it straight away, and don't use it until it is clean and dry.
Can I add essential oils?

Storing it after summer or winter
Before putting it away, do the full vinegar clean, dry every part completely, and store it with the tank lid open so no moisture is trapped.
